Neuroanesthesiology

At University of Mississippi Medical Center, anesthesiologists specialized in neuroanesthesiology provide anesthesia care for a comprehensive spectrum of neurosurgical procedures. Each year, about 1,300 patients undergo neurosurgical procedures at UMMC.

Anesthesia for neurosurgical procedures include:

  • Trauma (head injury with intracranial hematoma, spine injury)
  • Brain tumors (adult tumors, stereotactic biopsies, acoustic neuromas, pituitary tumors)
  • Epilepsy surgery
  • Neurovascular surgery (aneurysm clipping, arteriovenous malformations, carotid endarterectomy, moyamoya disease, extra cranial-intracranial bypass surgeries)
  • Movement disorder surgery (deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease)
  • Trigeminal neuralgia and chronic facial pain
  • Pediatric neurosurgery (Arnold-Chiari malformation, craniosynostosis, spina bifida, scoliosis surgery)
  • Endovascular neurosurgery (aneurysm coiling, arteriovenous malformations, embolization of vessels for cancer patients prior to major surgical procedures), treatment of vasospasm after aneurysm surgery, stenting procedures for carotid surgery
  • Pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors
  • Comprehensive stroke program
  • Awake craniotomy (speech mapping, motor cortex mapping)
  • Sitting craniotomy (posterior fossa tumors, posterior cervical spine surgery)
